There are several ways to create additional living space at your home, for example:

However, we would say that the most cost effective method of adding additional living space and with minimal disruption is to complete a garage conversion project. Some homes even have a doorway through to the garage from either the porch or hallway already so the majority of the work is only at the front off the house and on the inside of the garage. Regardless, even cutting a doorway through from the inside of the house to the garage and installing a supporting lintel is a relatively straightforward and cost effective job.
Unlike an extension or garden room, the walls and floor of a garage are already in place so it would be a matter of simply damp proofing and insulating the floor, walls and ceiling and you’re already well along the way to completion. Further, garage conversions tend to fall under permitted development, so no planning permission is required. Having said this, the local authority Building Control Department will need to be notified, a building notice submitted and visits at certain intervals completed by a building inspector to confirm each aspect of the project is completed to to appropriate standards. Again however, this is a straightforward process and usually doesn’t cost much either.
